The Glesga Review o Buiks (ISSN 2053-0560) is an online journal, foondit in 2013 by Rebecca DeWald and Mark West and editit up tae February 2023 by Rebecca DeWald, Eilidh McCabe, Samuel Tongue, and Mark West.
We furthset critical reviews, essays and interviews forby scrievin on owersettin, and are gled tae hae wark in ony o the leids o Scotland – English, Gàidhlig and Scots.
We’re interestit in mony different sorts o scrievin, for aw that we tak tent in particular o mair ootlin, owerluikit or neglectit scrievers and their darg. (Commercial books by muckle furthsetters hae a guid wheen o pairts tae gang tae for reviews awready!) Sayin thon, we never say ‘never’, and will furthset reviews on jist aboot onythin, gin somebody maks a strang eneuch threap for it.
Although oor main focus is tae fill the gap for thochtie, tentie critical scrievin, we furthest forby original creative wark, maistly short fiction, poetry and hybrid/visual forms. Sayin thon, we anely accept submissions in repone tae specific caw-oots or commissions. Hae a glisk ablow for mair details.
Oor Vision – is tae be an accessible, non-partisan community platform for scrievers and scrievin, frae Glesga and ither pairts.
Accessible means we’ll aye be open tae reviews that fowk submit, and for ideas and threaps for content that we can furthset on oor site.
Cause we are (and ettle tae bide) an online journal, we’re no thirlt tae wird-coonts and page limits that apply tae haird-copy, printit journals. This means we can gie oor contributors the space they need, tae say whit they want tae say, in the wey that they want tae say it.
Non-partisan means we want tae represent scrievers frae aw communities. In particular, this means giein a platform tae wirkin-cless vyces, and them frae socio-economically disadvantaged backgroonds.
Frae Glesga and ither pairts means we hae an interest in scrievin aboot owersettin and wad luve to hae contributions frae, and wirk wi, scrievers frae as faur aff as we can.
We uphaud that Glesga is, and has lang been, an international city wi historic strengths that come frae diversity and bein redd tae lairn frae, and adapt tae, new cultural ideas and practices – and we want this tae be reflectit in wark we furthset as the GRB.
Ower time, we howp ye’ll find that the wark we furthset matches up wi this vision and these values. If ye dinnae – please let us ken. We’ll aye be open tae yer feedback.
We will get things wrang. We’re new tae the ettle o rinnin a journal, are lairnin as we gang alang, and dinnae expect tae get awthin richt, aw o the time.
Sae, gin we faw ablow the staunarts ye expect frae us, please tell us. We promise tae gie richt-o-reply, in full, tae onybody that wants tae dispute or threap wi onythin we furthset.
Lastly, but maist importantly, we promise tae be respectful o and tae ettle, in aw that we dae, tae forder and tak tent o oor relationship wi youse – oor readers and contributors. This is aboot youse, no us. When we talk aboot the GRB as bein a platform, we mean it – we’re here tae heeze youse up, and gie yese a vyce. Time will tell how weel we dae. But for noo –
Thanks awfie for supportin the GRB!
Submissions
We’re aye open tae buik reviews and threaps for buiks tae be reviewed or proposals for critical scrievin, especially lang-form critical scrievin. Apairt frae thon, submissions are closed.
We’re awfie sorry that we’re no able tae offer peyment tae contributors for their darg the noo cause the GRB brings in nae income and taks nae financial support. This isnae a sustainable position ower the lang, or even the medium-term, and we’re wirkin tae chynge this.
We’re gled tae be gien information frae furthsettins (via email anely), on buiks that are comin oot and offers o review copies. Sayin thon, oor curn o contributors is anely sae muckle, and we’re dependent on their voluntary darg tae pit oot reviews. Sae, please tak tent that whiles we’re no able tae soorce reviews o unsolicitit new buiks.
We’ll pit oot caw-oots for specific types o scrievin (e.g. short-fiction, critical essays etc.) in the coorse o the year. Unsolicitit submissions (that arenae in repone tae a caw-oot or commission) willnae be read. Caw-oots will gang oot via oor social media channels on Instagram and Twitter – sae, please keep an ee on them.
